Human Hummers’ –
The Taos Hum

An incessant low frequency ‘hum’ tone has been torturing residents in an area in the U.S. in Taos, New Mexico, where the noise often drives people crazy. Only heard by a few, called human ‘hummers’, the low-pitched 30 to 80 Hz tone is perceived as sound, but it hasn’t been found with sensitive microphones or electromagnetic sensors. It has baffled researchers for years, but ear tone research of tones prior to earthquakes may unlock this mystery and may even possibly lead to an insight into a remedy for Tinnitus – a constant ringing in the ears that afflicts up to 50 million Americans.

Where does the sound originate?

In 1997, Congress directed scientists and some of the most prestigious research institutes in the nation to look into the strange low frequency hum in and around the small town of Taos. The investigators included Joe Mullins of the University of New Mexico and Horace Poteet of Sandia National Laboratories, who both wrote the final investigative report. James Kelly, a hearing research scientist with the University of New Mexico’s Health Sciences Center along with Joe Mullins concluded, there were “no known acoustic signals that might account for the hum, nor are there any seismic events that might explain it.” So where does the sound originate? How is it heard?

The clue to unraveling this mystery comes with earthquake precursor research and the advent of a tuned mass electronic atomic interferometer sensor. The earth indeed has a method of creating electrical stimulation in the auditory organ, forming a short duration ‘tinnitus’ episode – the ‘Earthquake Ear Tone’. Additional symptoms besides Ear Tone phenomena are the capability of irritability, dizziness, insomnia, pressure on the ears, ear pain, and including headaches – exactly as found in the sufferer’s of Taos Hum.

It was discovered by the Taos investigation that about roughly 2 percent of the survey of 1,440 residents in Taos were able to hear the low frequency tone. This same minority relationship follows for those that can ‘hear’ ear tones prior to earthquakes, referred to as ‘sensitives’; that most of the population does not experience or hear ‘ear tones’.

The Earth pulses in train of ‘chirps’ with trailing decay

The culprit to sensing tones without any sound or electromagnetic source is found in the unique nature of earth generated ‘chirps’. These pulses with trailing decay are much different than traditional electromagnetic waves. The ‘chirps’ will pass through shielded enclosures and generate pulses of current, even in human cells. Field studies have shown that these signals however, require a collective atomic mass to charge density ratio in order to ‘tune’ in to generate a response. This is the reason only a few percentage of the population is sensitive to these signals. It also is the reason why symptoms can vary from person to person, the ratio is extremely sensitive to atomic & resonant dimensions just as found in each person’s unique tissue anatomy dimensions.

Below is a tunable ‘atomic interferometer’ or an electronic ‘ear’ that is designed to detect the smallest of earth pulses and ‘chirps’. It was used to study the ratio of chirps to earthquakes in a region of earthquake swarming activity (Long Valley Caldera, CA).

Think of it as a light dimmer– able to dial in the precise light setting by adjusting a dial. By setting the precise charge ratio across a physical atomic junction, the sensor is able to ‘dial in’ or tune to the normally undetectable emissions.

It was found that this sensor was able to detect ‘chirps’ down to magnitude 1.5 sized quakes. The ‘chirp’ also preceded the earthquakes.

Long Valley Caldera is a unique area for study as it has periods of intense earthquake swarming. Most of the smaller earthquakes were south east of Mammoth Lakes in the south moat of bulge or uplift in the Caldera. This characteristic was important in mapping a known distance and magnitude, or ‘heart beat’ equivalent, to establish a sensor baseline amplitude strength to corresponding magnitudes of earthquakes.

The Earth pulses track earthquakes – and are precursory

Plots of the earth pulsing chirps sequences to rate of earthquakes (>= mag 1.5), revealed a tracking of rate of earth chirps to slope rate of earthquakes. Red is the earth pulsing chirp sequences, Green is earthquakes, both accumulating over time. In the testing, a knee to slope rates were observed as the swarming rate made a notable change.

This version of sensor was tuned to the earth emissions just prior to the earthquake(s). Advanced generation technology has pushed the limits to weeks in advance prior to the earthquake in observing earth pulsing chirp sequences.

The advanced generation technology required massive vault like enclosures with large volume target mass – a large and very sensitive form of tunable atomic interferometer. Each vault block is near 200 lbs and 20 inches square, both buried in the earth.

Click here to view a larger image of a large and very sensitive form of tunable atomic interferometerUsing this new technology has permitted studies of ‘sensitives’ during times of strong earthquake precursory conditions. The sensory technology provided the knowledge of when the earth was active and when it was not active.

For the most part, the study has resulted in a remarkable track of Taos like symptoms in ‘sensitives’ when the earth is active. It should be noted that this technology has discovered ‘active’ periods may not always lead to a pending earthquake. Only certain sequences lead to the earthquake. This difference has caused confusion to some sensitives who are suffering from symptoms, but with no corresponding earthquake. This fact is the same reason studies of animals (lost & found pet ads) don’t always correspond to earthquakes – the animals are accurate, but the ‘active’ period energy can only be seen with this technology. Another source of difficulty for sensitives is in volcanics.  This technology can track precursory volcanic associated conditions for months, with no corresponding event or earthquake to show for. The energy resonates in faults and in underground structures – the earth – this includes root systems to volcanoes.

Ear Tones are momentary ‘tinnitus’

The earth pulsing chirp sequences induce the exact tinnitus characteristics in a ‘sensitive’. This was confirmed on a subject with a 7,510 Hz low level tinnitus condition. A very strong Ear Tone elicited the identical 7,510 Hz tone. Lower frequency precursory ear tone was measured at 488 Hz. Sensitives generally report ‘crystalline’ ear tones for higher latitude earthquakes and lower frequency tones for more southerly latitude events. However, from person to person, the sensation of frequency, the characteristics, and the duration of the tone can vary. The frequency dependent nature of the tones per latitude is very accurate in research data using our technology in mapping resonant frequency by latitude.

At left is a empirical driven plot of the earth resonant frequency by latitude. It increases as latitude increases. Note: detecting and observing earth emissions for these frequency resonant plots requires this new technology.

Left Ear verses Right Ear – why the difference?

Each ear has its own precision tuning of the mass to charge density ratio. For example, the standing potential in the cochlea (endolymph fluid K+ rich, Na small vs perilymph Na rich K+ small) averages a net 125mV to 150mV differential. This is the ear’s own internal ‘battery’ to power the mechanical motion to electrical signal process of the ‘hair cells’. The endolymph and perilymph fluid chambers form a precise volume or conductive resonant cavity. As the cochlea is imbedded in the temporal bone (the densest in human body) this forms a solid to liquid cavity barrier or conductive resonant chamber. The earth generates very specific tuned harmonics of the base latitudinal resonant frequency. These harmonics can come into precise atomic mass to charge density ratio of the inner ear of the right or left ear, thus the reason one ear responds and not always the other. The base harmonic frequency of a resonating fault also allows sensitives to learn where the region may be for the source of emissions.

Additional tonal character of the induced electrical chirp train has qualities to the sound where sensitives are amazingly able to describe the differences. Some ear tones under water regions are different than on land, or in a volcanic region verses a faulted region.

Ear Tones heard around the world

The precursory emissions to large earthquakes can generate ear tones in sensitives around the world. The reason is due to the very strong energy of the emissions – or precursors to the pending earthquake. Sensitives are able to learn the tonal characteristics, phasing, modulation – for regions around the world - using the most impressive signal processing systems ever created – the human brain. The earth’s crust acts as a waveguide to this energy to pipe it around the globe. Detection sensors use this fact to detect emissions at the earth’s surface using ‘skin effect’ similar to RF waveguide designs.

The ‘ear block’ – can it help tinnitus sufferers?

One of the most interesting effect in sensitives is the ‘ear block’. It has been described by some sensitives as if a ‘mute’ button was pushed. The ear becomes silent to all sound for a short period. The earth may hold a clue to an answer to seeking a cure or a lessening of tinnitus sufferers. More often, the ear block is accompanied with a pure tone.

Suffering ‘sensitives’ – is there a remedy?

Our research to date indicates there is no easy remedy to sensitives when the earth is active. However, the first step should be taken by professionals in the medical and other related sciences to realize that the suffering is a real phenomenon. Just as the investigators of the Taos Hum never questioned the existence and the symptoms of the ‘hummers’, the same is true for earthquake ‘sensitives’.
